Kitten playing with a toyWe feed our cats every day. We make sure that they always have fresh, clean water. We keep their litter boxes clean. As they sleep in their favorite spots we take the time to give them a scratch or pet just to let them know that we love them. But, could we be doing more?

If we're not spending at least five minutes a day playing with our cats, then yes ... we could be doing more.

The importance of play

An indoor cat confined to a home instead of out in the wild on the prowl needs the stimulation that they are not getting from going outside. Play is an important mental and phyical stimulant for your cat that will help to keep them healthy. Play time will also help prevent obesity. If your cat spends their day laying around just enjoying life, five minutes of play each day will go a long way.

Teaching cats how to play

It's important to teach you cat the difference between good, fun play and aggressive play. The best way to do that is with cat toys. Using toys will help your cat learn that your hands and feet aren't acceptable targets when they want to play and you're walking down a hall way or cooking dinner.

Game that involve chasing and pouncing will keep your cats stimulated and exercised. Kitty fishing is a fun game that can be play with a string that has a ball tied to the end. Small fuzzy stuffed toys, and balls that roll also make great chase and "attack" play toys.

Knowing when they've had enough

Pay attention to your cat to know when they've had enough. Most of the time they'll let you know by just walking away, but be aware of sudden changes in behavior or low growling sounds that may indicate that play time is over.

Most importantly ... have fun and enjoy your cats!!!!
